Pets have a special position in the U.S. and more than 60% of all households have either a dog or a cat. Just how much Americans love their pets shows the following statistic:
- 84% refer to themselves as their pet's "Mom" or "Dad". - 72% first greet their pet when returning home. In Los Angeles, the city where distrust and disloyalty dominate, the dog often becomes the faithful and reliable partner and buddy. It therefore doesn't come as a surprise, that many dogs are the mirror image of their owners. But unfortunately there are still hundreds of pets being abandoned or mistreated every day. The following links should help support adequate and responsible pet ownership and we hope this information will encourage current and future pet owners to give their pet a good home and the best possible care.
Basically you should - take your pet to the vet for routine check-ups and vaccinations regularly - carefully choose the food - never let animals in the car (danger of heat stroke) - be familiar with First Aid - be prepared for earthquakes, fire or floodings (food, water, carrier or leash, |

The homosexual scene mainly takes place in West Hollywood and Silverlake. The constant struggle for equal rights has lead to many public demonstrations in the past few years. But yet, not a single State in America has approved of or legalized marriage between homosexual couples. And with the support of strong voices, more and more homosexuals have been coming out recently, trying to motivate their fellow people to join in the fight against discrimination on every level.

More Sights Spectacular and unforgettable view of Los Angeles by night. Lake Shrine A serene place with a shrine containing parts of Ghandi's ashes. Crystal Cathedral Cathedral made from glass. Theme Parks We recommend considering a full day for all theme park visits. In addition we recommend bringing along a picnic in a small backpack, since waiting lines at food parlors and restaurants are usually very long and prices enormously high. Another option is to ask for a "return entry stamp" at the entrance/exit and then go eat at the cheap fast food stands located nearby.
It is best to arrive at the ticket counter by no later than 10 a.m. Always ask for discounts - coupons are available at most accommodations. For an overall impression, we recommend taking the 45 min. Backlot Tram Tour first. The tour offers a behind the scenes look at the studios, where to this day actual filming takes place. After the tour take the endlessly long escalator to the lower level of the park. Don't miss the great attraction Backdraft (unfortunately E.T. has been replaced by a new attraction). Jurassic Park is for daredevils and those who want to get soaking wet. Back in the upper level of the park experience Terminator. The Waterworld Show is a must see attraction. Don't miss it! The best seats are located in the middle of the middle section. On calm days (no wind), an unforgettable surprise awaits visitors at the near end of the show, when the actor up on the observation deck starts waiving his flags...! After exiting the park, stroll down Universal City Walk and enjoy the various restaurants, coffee shops, stores and the 18-movie-theater complex. During winter time, visitors may engage in a few rounds of ice skating while listening to Christmas carols. And to everyone's amusement, it will snow every hour.
It is best to arrive at the ticket counter by no later than 10 a.m. The Fast Past will help you avoid long lines inside the park. In order to get an overview of the park we recommend boarding the train at the Main Street Station and enjoy the great ride around Disneyland. Back on Main Street the following attractions should definitely not be missed: Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Small World, und Jungle Cruise. Also lots of fun are Toontown and a ride on the Mississippi Steam Boat. For daredevils there are stomach-turning rides like Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. During the summer, the traditional "American style" fireworks take place; Emphasized by patriotic symphonies they will even move the toughest visitor to tears. Notice: Always make sure to remember WHERE and in which section you parked the car! At midnight visitors are often seen wandering around desperately looking for their cars. Tips and Tricks, Discount Tickets
The park is adjacent to Disneyland. It's not as popular as Disneyland but due to special "Park Hopper Tickets" it's possible to visit this park at a great price. Don't miss the famous and extremely popular and beautiful Electrical Light Parade!
A fun park with real California charm.

In order to legally work in the United States, a working permission, issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) is required. The U.S. personal registration number is called Social Security Number and is issued by the Social Security Administration. Among other things, this number enables people to receive retirement money and pay taxes.
Finding a job often is a nerve-wrecking and time-consuming task and most of the time it's about being at the right place at the right time.
Job applicants are usually asked to either fax or e-mail a cover letter together with a 1 to 2-page resume (do not attach a photo). In most cases applicants will not receive any reaction or response and one has to assume, that one has not been considered for the job. Thank-you-notes or written confirmations on behalf of the hiring company are not common practice. Applicants who are considered for the job, are invited for an interview. More than one interview might be necessary and only then can a response be expected.
Notice: Many of the published job ads are "fictitious ads", which means, open positions are publicly announced only because it's required by the anti-discrimination and equal rights laws. But most of these companies already have a particular person in mind or the opening will be filled with one of their employees and new applications are therefore hardly ever considered.
Employment contracts usually lack fair terms and are to the worker's disadvantage. Employers can terminate contracts any time without giving notice, without fair warning or for no reason at all. Social plans are usually only offered by governmental institutions or well-established companies. Employees receive an average of 2 weeks of paid vacation annually.
The minimum wage in the State of California is US$ 6.75/hour. For workers on a payroll a tax deduction of approx. 20-25% applies (for independent contractors approx. 33%). The majority of employers pay between US$ 6.75 - 11.00 per hour. This situation forces most people to get more than one job and also explains, why tips play such an important role. Knowing this, we ask travelers to be a little more generous. Paychecks are usually issued twice a month (on the 1st and the 15th) by either check or wire transfer. Unfortunately payment attitudes are terrible and in most cases, workers have to fight for every penny. Especially independent contractors spend weeks or months running after their money trying to get customers to pay their invoices.
Taxes: It is safer for newcomers to have their taxes filed by an accountant. The American tax system is complicated and hiring an accountant can help avoid mistakes. Taxes have to be filed to the Internal Revenue Service, IRS by April 15. |

Americans are excellent motivators and have a unique way of expressing joy and happiness. If they feel like hugging, cheering, clapping, hopping or whistling in order to get their point across, nothing will stop them. This effervescent enthusiasm makes many reserved Swiss feel uneasy at first. But most of them soon realize, how contagious this form of expression can be and what a difference it can make. And as the world could witness after the events of September 11, 2001 - Americans also perfectly understand how to unite, stick together and stand strong in times of crises.
It is customary to call people by their first name. Whether it's Debbie the lawyer, Greg the cashier or Tracey the manager - they are all known by their first names.
And then there is the "infamous" middle name. It seems, that every respected American has a middle name or at least an initial. For Europeans an almost embarrassing moment when having to leave the small initials box empty on forms; or when desperately trying to ignore the look of disbelieve on the customer service representative's face while admitting, that no middle name can be stated.
Americans are not used to shaking hands. Common forms of greeting are Hi or How are you, together with a nod or smile. But if you are just about ready to spill your guts about your current life situation, you will quickly learn, that actually nobody is really interested in hearing your story. It's therefore best to just greet back with a short Good, how about you. The terms Sir or M'am are expressions of respect. After a Nice to meet you a simple Likewise or The pleasure is all mine is appropriate. But even after a promising See ya or See you later don't get your hopes up. It's quite possible, that you'll never see this person again.
Many Americans find silence uncomfortable. It is interpreted as something being wrong. However, they prefer to remain silent rather than contradicting a friend who's opinion they don't share.
Americans are known for their kindness and hospitality. If you receive a personal invitation it is courteous to bring a small present. This could be a souvenir from home, flowers or a bottle of wine. Never arrive early to invitations. If you are going to be late, call the hosts and let them know. Most people are very proud of their home and they will usually invite guests to take a tour. Do not refuse such a tour and make sure to compliment the hosts on their home.
If you are joining a party be prepared for a rather casual atmosphere. People don't tend to talk to the same person for more than a few minutes. Like a butterfly they will go from one person to the other exchanging some words and then go on to the next "victim". Serious discussions seldom emerge. At most parties, people will remain standing and keep rotating throughout the room. It is customary to keep a distance of minimum 40 cm between two people talking. By nature, Americans are very blunt and curious (in a naive and nice way), especially when they recognize a foreign accent. They will immediately throw some standard questions at the "visitor" and you can bet on it, that some distant cousin of the speaker has visited that country once before.
Date vs. Appointment A Date is always a romantic get-together and Swiss should be cautious about randomly accepting dates. Often Americans expect more from a date than foreigners, not familiar with the rules, are willing to give. An Appointment is more like an official meeting. It's used in connection with business meetings, medical visits or other official events. |

It's sad that ignorance and prejudice against people with different cultures and religions still is practiced on a daily basis. Pretty amazing when considering that all people in this nation (except for the Natives) are immigrated foreigners. The events of September 11, 2001 have made the situation even worse. Although there is a lot of outpour of affection by communities and individuals toward those wrongfully accused, the statistics show, that hate crimes have increased drastically. Education is the only way to turn ignorance into tolerance and understanding. Many groups and individuals have begun to work in this direction and hereby set an excellent example.
Most forms still require the stating of the ethnic group. The options are: - Native Americans (People of American Indian descent) - African Americans (Blacks, Africans) - Hispanics (People from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Latin & South America) - Asians (People from Japan, China, Korea, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka) - Caucasians (People from Europe, Canada, Australia, Russia) - Orientals (People from the Middle East and other Arabic countries) |

The park is adjacent to Disneyland. It's not as popular as Disneyland but due to special "Park Hopper Tickets" it's possible to visit this park at a great price. Don't miss the famous and extremely popular and beautiful Electrical Light Parade!

Standing in line must be an American invention. Nobody in this world knows how to stand in line for hours, or even days, as well as the Americans. These people's determination to get a concert ticket, a lottery ticket or a campground space for the Labor Day Weekend is amazing and they are prepared to endure anything from heat waves to rainfalls. They'll drag along sun beds, blankets, sunshades and coolers to make the long wait bearable; and when eventually a TV crew shows up to interview the waiting crowd, the torture was well worthwhile. Once people claim their position, nothing will make them budge. Intruders and short cutters don't stand a chance because both, people in front and behind, will help defend everyone's position according to the rule: First come - First serve. |
